Frequently Asked Questions

Is this legal?

Yes. Federal FOIA law allows "any person" to file requests, and the Supreme Court has confirmed that requester identity "has no bearing" on disclosure decisions. We file requests in RequestPing's name as a legal proxy service.

How anonymous am I really?

The federal agency will only see RequestPing as the requester. We minimize data collection and don't publicly post your requests. However, absolute anonymity cannot be guaranteed—agencies may disclose requester information through their own FOIA logs.

What about state FOIA requests?

Currently we only support federal agencies. Some states have residency restrictions that complicate anonymous filing. We're exploring state-level support for future releases.

Can you help with appeals?

We can provide general information about the appeals process, but custom appeal assistance may constitute legal advice. For complex appeals, we recommend consulting a FOIA attorney.
